How to Downgrade Your Credit Card to a No Annual Fee Version: Complete Guide

A product change (downgrade) lets you switch from a fee-bearing card to a $0/year card within the same issuer family. Your account stays open, your credit history is preserved, and your credit limit remains the same. This is almost always better than cancelling.

Why Downgrade Instead of Cancel?

Preserves credit history

Account age is 15% of your FICO score. A 10-year-old card you downgrade keeps aging. Cancel it, and it stops contributing after 10 years (when closed accounts fall off your report).

Keeps your credit limit

Your credit utilization ratio (30% of FICO) depends on total available credit. Closing a card with a $10,000 limit raises your utilization and can drop your score 30-50 points.

Points transfer

In most cases, points or miles earned on the old card transfer to the new one. Within the same ecosystem (Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex MR), your balance carries over.

Strata Premier ($95/yr)Double Cash or Custom Cash ($0)ThankYou points convert
AAdvantage Platinum Select ($99/yr)AAdvantage MileUp ($0) ($0)Yes, AAdvantage miles stay

The Citi Double Cash is the strongest no-fee downgrade target in the Citi ecosystem. It earns an effective 2% on everything and has no category caps.

Bank of America

From (Fee Card)To (No-Fee Card)Points Transfer?
Premium Rewards ($95/yr)Unlimited Cash Rewards or Customized Cash ($0)Yes, rewards transfer

Bank of America Preferred Rewards members get bonus multipliers on all BoA cards, including the no-fee options. A Platinum Honors member gets 2.625% on the Unlimited Cash Rewards card.

Discover

From (Fee Card)To (No-Fee Card)Points Transfer?

Discover has no annual fee on any of its consumer cards. The Discover it Cash Back, Discover it Chrome, and Discover it Miles are all $0/year. No downgrade needed.

Step-by-Step Process

1

Call the number on the back of your card

Tell the representative you would like to do a product change (or 'product conversion'). You cannot do this online with most issuers.

2

Request a specific no-fee card

Name the card you want to downgrade to. For example: 'I would like to product-change my Sapphire Preferred to a Freedom Unlimited.'

3

Confirm the details

Ask: Will my account number stay the same? Will my credit limit transfer? Will my points transfer? Will there be a hard inquiry? (The answer to the last question should always be no.)

4

Ask about sign-up bonus eligibility

Product changes typically do not qualify for sign-up bonuses. If the no-fee card has a good bonus, consider whether applying separately (and keeping the old card or cancelling it) makes more sense.

5

Wait for the new card

A new card with the downgraded product will arrive in 7-10 business days. Your old card will stop working once the product change is processed.

What You Keep vs What You Lose

You Keep

  • Account history and credit age
  • Credit limit (stays the same)
  • Points/miles within the same ecosystem
  • Account number (usually stays the same)
  • Authorized users on the account

You Lose

  • Premium perks (lounge access, travel credits)
  • Higher earning rates on bonus categories
  • Statement credits (dining, streaming, etc.)
  • Travel insurance upgrades
  • Sign-up bonus eligibility (not eligible for new card bonus via product change)

Timing Considerations

Wait at least 12 months after opening the card. Some issuers have a minimum holding period, and downgrading too early can result in a clawback of the sign-up bonus.

Use remaining credits first. If your card has statement credits (travel credit, dining credit), use them before downgrading. They disappear the moment you product-change.

Redeem transferable points first if the new card has a weaker redemption rate. For example, Sapphire Reserve points are worth 1.5x when redeemed through the travel portal. Freedom Unlimited points are only worth 1x. Transfer to airlines or redeem before downgrading.

Downgrade right after the annual fee posts. You typically have 30-60 days to get a full refund of the annual fee after it posts. This gives you maximum time with the premium card's benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I downgrade my card online?
Usually no. Most issuers require a phone call for product changes. Amex occasionally allows online product changes through the 'View All Credit Card Offers' page when logged in, but phone is more reliable.
Can I upgrade back later without a new application?
Yes, most issuers allow product upgrades. However, you will not receive a sign-up bonus when upgrading via product change. If the upgraded card has a valuable sign-up bonus, applying as a new card (if you are eligible) is better.
Does downgrading affect my credit score?
Minimal impact. Since the account stays open with the same credit limit and history, the two factors most affected by account closure (utilization and average age) are preserved. You may see a temporary 5-10 point dip while the bureaus update the product type, but it typically recovers within a billing cycle.
Can I downgrade a card I opened less than a year ago?
Some issuers allow it but may claw back the sign-up bonus. Chase and Amex generally require 12 months before a product change. Check your card agreement or call to ask about the minimum holding period.
What happens to my automatic payments and subscriptions?
If your account number stays the same, automatic payments continue uninterrupted. If the number changes (less common), you will need to update your payment information with each merchant. Ask about this when you call.
